Players who might be future Olympians will get a chance later this month to compete with the womens basketball team that the United States will be sending to the Rio Games. The USA Basketball womens select team was announced Monday. This 11-player group will train alongside the national team on July 23-24 in Los Angeles, then play an exhibition game against the Olympians on July 25. The location of the first practice has yet to be determined. The second practice and the game will be held at the University of Southern Californias Galen Center in Los Angeles. The national team staff will coach both groups, and head coach Geno Auriemma is very familiar with two members of the select team: former UConn standouts Stefanie Dolson (Washington Mystics) and Kiah Stokes (New York Liberty). Each of them has a WNBA teammate on the select team, as they join Washingtons Kahleah Copper and New Yorks Sugar Rodgers. One other WNBA team has two select-team players: the Dallas Wings, with Odyssey Sims and Aerial Powers. The other select-team members are Kelsey Bone (Phoenix Mercury), Natasha Howard (Minnesota Lynx), Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm), Tiffany Mitchell (Indiana Fever) and Elizabeth Williams (Atlanta Dream).Sims has prior experience playing for the national team: She was part of the squad that won gold in the 2014 world championship. She, Loyd and Dolson were among the finalists for this Olympic team.At least one of the 2016 Olympians will not return for 2020: Tamika Catchings is retiring after this WNBA season. At least a few others will likely age out of Olympic spots over the next four years. This is a really good group of young and talented athletes, Auriemma said of the select team. Having them train against our USA national team will not only help us prepare for Rio, but it will also give us a chance to evaluate them for future USA Basketball teams. After playing the select team, the Olympic squad will play three additional exhibition games -- all on the East Coast -- before going to Brazil. The U.S. team will face France on July 27 at Delawares Bob Carpenter Center, the former home gym of Olympian Elena Delle Donne (Chicago Sky).On July 29, the United States will play Canada at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
