SKOPJE, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Despite the meetings with visiting EU officials, political gap between the archrival parties in Macedonia is still wide with the conservative party VMRO-DPMNE demanding fresh elections on Wednesday.
It would be better for Macedonia to hold fresh general elections because sooner or later everyone will understand that this is the best way out of the political stalemate, the VMRO-DPMNE said in a press release.
Such statement comes after the meeting between the party leader Nikola Gruevski and the European Commissioner Johannes Hahn along with three MEPs.
"We need to take advantage to hold the early elections alongside the municipal elections and to do so in the shortest time?frame possible, putting finally to rest the long running political crisis," VMRO-DPMNE said in its statement.
Commissioner Hahn called on Macedonian President Ivanov to allow for the creation of a party led by the Social-Democratic SDSM party led by Zoran Zaev, but VMRO?-DPMNE declared that it would be unfair to mandate a candidate who presented a platform drafted in another country and that undermined Macedonia's unity.
After the publication of the VMRO-DPMNE press release, the head of SDSM Zaev reacted by saying to reporters that the holding of early general elections was not a way out of the crisis.
He reiterated his call to the President Ivanov, asking the latter to give him the mandate to form the new government and bring normalcy in the country.
According to Zaev, the president will not mandate him even after another elections.
The party said in a press release earlier that all it wanted now was a peaceful transfer of power towards the coalition led by SDSM which has the majority of parliament with 67 seats. Enditem
